Yugioh Regionals – Nashville
We’ve kicked off our first Yugioh regionals for the 2011 season! And what a day it’s been! With a total of 116 players in the main event, we’re expecting to see a huge variety of new decks. With Gravekeeper’s coming off a huge win from YCS Atlanta, players are starting to prepare for that matchup, as it is a favorite against many decks in the format. WE’ve already seen a large number of players playing Gravekeeper’s and Plant Synchro decks, with a surprising showing of Six Samurai. With 3 rounds left in the main event before we enter the Top 8 cut, it’s anybody’s game to see who makes the cut!
David Borden vs Jason Napier
David Aguiar vs Cody Kirkland
Hai Nguyen vs Corey Geames
Round 5 Feature Match
David Borden vs Jason Napier
Game 1 David won the roll and chose to go first, he opened with two face down row cards and a set monster. Jason summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and attacked the face down. David took the chance to use one of his back row cards, Book of Moon, to flip the Thunder King into face down defense.
David drew and summoned Lonefire Blossom after flipping his Dandylion face up. The he tribute Dandylion to special summon a spore into defense position. Next he Synchro summoned Formula Snychron and drew a card with it’s effect. He removed Dandylion to special summon spore as a LV4 and synchro summoned the incredibly powerful Stardust Dragon. He wasn’t done though as he synchro summoned again using Formula and Stardust to unleash Shooting Star Dragon. Jason responded with Bottomless Trap Hole and David used Shooting Star’s effect to negate the trap card. He placed a card into his spell/trap row before he attacked Shooting Star, again Jason had the answer with Dimensional Prison and David was forced to end his turn.
Jason activated Pot of Duality to start the turn, revealing Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer, Cyber Dragon, and Torrential Tribute. He took the Kycoo and flipped Thunder King to attack and got 1900 damage in on David’s life. He ended his turn by placing a card in his row. Now David was way behind and he could only set a monster and pass his turn.
Jason summoned Doomcaliber Knight and attacked with it. David was ready and used Mirror Force to destroy all of the monsters on Jason’s board. David was up next and flipped Ryko Lightsworn Hunter and used its effect to destroy a face down Royal Oppression. David took a moment before he decided to summon Debris Dragon and special summon Formula Synchron. He synchro’d the Debris and Ryko for Iron Chain Dragon, and then attacked with both monsters for 2700 damage. Iron Chain sent Spirit Reaper, Smashing Ground, and Solemn Judgment into the yard from Jason’s deck. David finished up his turn by bringing another Stardust Dragon into play via Synchro Summon.
Jason was now behind in the game and set a monster and a row card before ending his turn. David was now ahead 6100 to 5300 and chose to play Mystical Space Typhoon and destroys Jason’s Bottomless Trap Hole. He then played One For One, discarding Glow-Up Bulb to special summon Effect Veiler in defense position. He tribute the Veiler for Caius the Shadow Monarch and removed Jason’s Banisher of the Radiance before he attacked for 4900 damage.
Jason again could only set a monster and spell or trap and end his turn. David activates Glow-Up’s effect and synchro summoned Black Rose Dragon. He didn’t activate the destruction effect before he could attack Jason scooped up the cards and we’re going to game 2!
Jason chooses to go first for game 2 and opened with a set monster and two row cards. David began his turn by playing Cold Wave before summoning Doomcaliber Knight. He attacked and destroyed Jason’s Doomcaliber Knight. Jason was behind in game two already and it clearly showed when he summoned a Doomcaliber Knight just to suicide it into Jason’s Knight.
David summoned Lonefire Blossom and held priority on its effect to search for another Lonefire. He retained priority for the second one and special summoned Dandylion in defense. He finished his turn by playing a card down in his row. Jason was up and started by summoning Kycoo, who was immediately sent into Dandylion. David got two tokens out of the trade and after Jason had nothing else he was ready to go to work. He started with a second Doomcaliber Knight and sent it into Kycoo. Now Jason had plenty of uses for his spells and traps and flipped the Knight down with Book of Moon. Seeing no other good plays David ended his turn.
Jason drew to four cards in hand, and took a moment to look through his graveyard and then David’s. He shuffled his hand and thinks for a bit, before summons BLackwing – Gale the Whirlwind. David checks his sets before playing Book of Moon on Gale, turning it facedown. Jason attacked a token with Kycoo, and David flipped Mirror Force to destroy it. David tribute both of his tokens for Tytannial and attacked the facedown Gale before he ended his turn.
Jason looks over his hand and played Monster Reborn, to special summon Kycoo. He summoned Effect Veiler and then synchro summons for Ally of Justice Catastor. He attacked the Tytannial and destroys it with Catastor’s effect before ending his turn. David flip up Doomcaliber Knight and Jason responds with Effect Veiler to destroy it. David could only pass on the rest of his turn.
Jason checked the life total before he attacked directly with Catastor. After the damage was dealt David special summoned Gorz and also gets a 2200 atk/def token with it. Jason removed Doomcaliber Knight and Effect Veiler to special summon Chaos Sorcerer and used the effect from the sorcerer to remove Gorz from the game. David is down 5800 to Jasons 8000 life as the turn ends.
David began with summoning Glow-Up Bulb and synchro summoned with his Lv7 Gorz token to make Thought Ruler Archfiend. Jason had no response and David attacked the Chaos Sorcerer destroying it and netting himself some needed life in the process. Jason was now on his heels as he changed Catastor’s position and set another monster before passing the turn.
David attacked the Catastor destroying and goes up to 10,300 Life points. He finished up his turn by adding Thunder King Rai-Oh to his board. Jason could only pass on his turn as now David was pressing his advantage. He attacked the facedown monster with Thought Ruler, but ran into the ultra-defensive Spirit Reaper.
Jason was content setting a spell or trap and ending his turn. David began the turn by flipping Snowman Eater face up and used its effect to destroy the Spirit Reaper. Then he attacked with Thunder King after he switched Thought Ruler to defense in fear of a Mirror Force. Jason responded with the attack to Mystical Space Typhoon killing off his own Trap Hole. This allowed him to halt the other attacks by special summoning Gorz gaining a 1900/1900 token in the process. David looked through his Extra Deck and played Foolish Burial, putting Spore in the graveyard. He activated the Spore, removing Lonefire and making it a LV4 Tuner. He then synchro summoned Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier and uses its effect to discard two cards, one being a Dandylion, and destroyed Gorz and its Token!
Jason draws with only two cards in hand and says“I’ve got no good play…” He played Allure, looks at what he drew and offered the handshake!
David grinds out of a bad hand early game and brought out Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier from Hidden Arsenal 3! David Borden moves on with an undefeated record!
Round 7 Feature Match
David Aguiar vs Cody Kirkland
David Aguiar is a local player for TNLG and appears at locals frequently. He’s here with an X-1 record today and is looking to make the top 8. Cody is from Memphis and is in the same position as David, one of them will make top 8 while the other player would have to hope for tie-breakers to make the playoff cut. Cody lost the dice roll and David chose to go first.
David opened Yellow Gadget to search Green and then set 3 spell/traps to end the turn. Cody also set 3 spell/traps and added XX-Saber Fulhelmknight to his board. He chose to attack the gadget but David was ready with Dimensional Prison. Cody ended his turn but not before getting hit with Mystical Space Typhoon which destroyed his Reinforce Truth.
David summoned Green Gadget and activated its effect to search out Red Gadget. He attacked directly with his gadgets before setting another row card and ending his turn. Cody cleared the Yellow Gadget as he attacked with his freshly summoned Boggart Knight. He also ended his turn by adding another card to his row.
David flipped his Green Gadget and summoned Neo-Spacian Grand Mole. Cody read the Grand Mole before flipping it face down with Book of Moon. David was forced to end his turn. Cody led off with Mind Control gaining control of Grand Mole. He attacked the Green Gadget with his Knight and sent Mole over before he finished his turn.
David flip summoned the Grand Mole and added Red Gadget to his board and used its effect to add Yellow Gadget to his hand. He attacked Boggart with Mole and sent them both back to their hands. Red Gadget was able to attack directly for 1300, putting Cody at 5500 and David at 6800. Cody drew his card, and in his standby phase David flipped Mind Crush calling Boggart Knight. Cody reveals his hand and discards the Knight, showing Bottomless Trap Hole and X-Saber Faultroll. Having no plays he ended his turn after placing a card into his row.
David summoned Machina Gearframe but it was hit with the Bottomless. He was able to search out Machine Force with its effect. He then discarded the Fortress and Yellow Gadget to bring out another Machine Fortress but Cody was ready with a second Bottomless. David attacked directly for 1300 and ended his turn. Cody had two cards in hand and played Upstart Goblin to draw a card. He sighed in disappointment and ended his turn.
David summoned another Gearframe to search out another Fortress. He discarded the Fortress and Green Gadget to special summon the Fortress and attacked with the Red Gadget directly. Gearframe follows next and a direct attack from Fortress ends the first duel!
Cody started the second duel with two set spell/traps. He summoned Boggart Knight and used the effect to special summon Fulhelmknight before ending his turn. David played Mystical Space Typhoon on a backrow and destroyed Solemn Judgment. He then set two cards and ended his turn.
Cody flipped up Trap Stun and summoned XX-Saber Airbellum. He attacked with Fulhelm Knight and then Airbellum. Airbellum didn’t make it across though as it was turned facedown with Book of Moon. He finished the turn by attacking with the Boggart. David played Smashing Ground and destroyed Boggart. He finished up his turn by summoning Banisher of the Radiance.
Cody flipped the Airbellum back up and ran it into Banisher. He followed that attack up with a second Fulhelmknight and attacked twice before ending his turn. David drew and set a card before he passed on the reset of his turn. Cody switched one of his Fulhelmknight to defense and attacked with the other. He ended by setting a monster and spell/trap.
David discarded Machine Force and Fortress to play the Fortress but he passed the turn without attacking. Cody could only set another card in his row on his turn. David Summoned Grand Mole but again didn’t attack. Cody was ready and flipped his face down Pashuul up. He then summoned Darksoul and used them to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor, but it was Negated with Royal Oppression from David. Cody ended his turn and searched out Faultroll.
David summoned Red Gadget and searched his deck for Yellow Gadget. Red attacked the defense position Fulhelmknight and Cody negated the attack. David had nothing else so he ended his turn. Cody shuffled his hand and thought about his options. He attacked the Grand Mole with his Fulhelmknight but David turned it facedown with Book of Moon.
David was up again and summoned Green Gadget which searched out a Red. Green attacked the Fulhelmknight but now Cody was ready and turned it down with Book of Moon. Red attacked the facedown Fulhelmknight finally destroying it.
Cody summoned Boggart and then dropped two Faultrolls! One Faultroll attacked the Red Gadget and the other was going directly. Cody took advantage of a weak hand from David to drop two Faultrolls for the win and we are going to game three.
David started off game three with 3 set spell/traps and summoned Green Gadget to search out a Red Gadget. Cody drew and looked at the field before setting a monster and two spell/traps to his back row. David summoned Banisher of the Radiance and attacked the facedown monster. Cody responded with Book of Moon and David passed on the rest of his turn.
Cody flipped Trap Stun but David responded with Solemn Judgment. He pressed on with Boggart Knight and activated it to summon Emmersblade. David responded with Trap Hole on Boggart. Cody continued to press on by dropping two Faultrolls again!! Emmersblade attacked Green Gadget but Cody lost all his monsters to Mirror Force! He ended his turn forgetting to search out Darksoul.
David summons Red Gadget which fetched Yellow and attacked for 4300 damage total. Cody passed his turn with no plays and David summoned the Yellow Gadget. With a field of Gadgets and no defense left, Cody conceded the match. David moves on to the Top 8, while Cody has to chance his luck on tie-breakers and make the cut.
Top 8 Feature Match
After 7 rounds of swiss, we finally have our Top 8 Players. Among the top 8, we have 3 Gravekeeper decks, 1 Gladiator Beast, 1 Machine Gadget, and 3 Plant Synchro variants that have made the final cut. In the feature match we have Hai Nguyen with his plant anti-meta deck facing Corey Geames running Gravekeeper’s.
Hai won the roll after a few ties and chose to begin the game with a card in his row and Lonefire Blossom. The Lonefire searched out another Lonefire which searched out Tytannial. Corey countered this aggressive draw with one of his own. He played Allure of Darkness removing a Gravekeeper’s Recruiter and then placed a face down Monster and 2 spells/traps.
Hai found Doomcaliber Knight and went for a row card, which was Book of Moon and it flipped the Knight down. Gravekeeper’s Spy from Corey was hit with Effect Veiler so he was forced to clear the board with Dark Hole. His Recruiter was countered with Solemn Warning and he was forced to end the turn. Hai ripped a Pot of Avarice, having exactly 5 monsters in the grave; he then shuffled those in and drew two cards. He again led with Lonefire though this time it was hit with a Solemn Warning and he passed the turn.
Gravekeeper’s Stele from Corey got back a couple of monsters but he had no other plays. Pot of Duality is the most popular card in the format but it didn’t get a lot when Hai played it, clearly dissapointing. Descendant entered play for Corey, and he used his effect to kill face down Sangan. Commandant was searched and he played Necrovalley. Solemn Judgment was used to counter the Necrovalley, but Corey had his own copy of Solemn, countering the counter. Corey sent the Descendant into the attack zone and took 2000 life from Hai.
Royal Tribute got three monsters from Hai but he stoned the attack from Descendant with Debris Dragon. Hai would need a super rip from the top of his deck and didn’t disappoint with Caius the Shadow Monarch which removed a face down Spy, and attacked over the Descendant. Now it would be Corey’s turn to rip something to survive, but it wasn’t to be as Hai takes game 1.
Corey began the game with a face down monster and two spells/traps face down, similar to his open game one. Hai led the game with Cyber Dragon and Thunder King Rai-Oh, a very different deck seemingly. The anti-meta deck would be change a lot after side decks were brought in. Hai attacked with both creatures but both were met with Book of Moons. Descendant was flipped up and Recruiter was sent to the Grave to kill Cyber Dragon. He got Necrovalley and attacked through Thunder King.
Hai wasn’t fazed as he had another Cyber Dragon and another Thunder King Rai-Oh, and sent them over. Corey had Dark Hole to clear the board and brought out Night Assailant. Hai cleared the Assailant with Smashing Ground and placed his last card face down. Malefic Stardust Dragon entered play, but Hai was ready with the Torrential Tribute. Both players were now in top deck mode with neither having cards in hand after Royal Tribute cleared the monsters from Hai’s hand. It was Corey who ripped a Gravekeeper and rode it to a quick victory as Hai never found an answer.
Hai began game three with Doomcaliber Knight and 2 spells/traps. Now Corey had the Cyber Dragon but it was hit with Book of Moon from Hai. He finished his turn with Necrovalley and 2 spells or traps of his own. The attack from Doomcaliber to Cyber Dragon was thwarted with Book of Moon from Corey and Hai placed a monster face down before he ended his turn.
Corey flipped up his Cyber Dragon and attacked Doom Caliber but had no other plays. Hai reached for Ryko, but the effect was stuck with Effect Veiler. He then Tributed Ryko to summon Cyber Dragon and then brought out Chimeratech Fortress Dragon. He ended his turn by playing Foolish Burial for Dandylion.
Corey needed a big turn here and placed Gravekeeper’s Spy face down. He would be denied as the Gravkeeper was hit with Nobleman of Crossout on his opponent’s turn. Hai continued the pressure with Doomcaliber Knight. His attack for another face down was hit with a big Recruiter and Hai had no other effects. Commandant was countered with Solemn Warning and Corey ended his turn. Hai drew and summoned Debris Dragon and synchro summoned Iron Chain Dragon with his two tokens but it was met with Solemn Warning.
Corey set a monster and passed. Hai drew and passed it back. Corey summoned Gravekeeper’s Assailant and Hai responded with Torrential Tribute, clearing the field. Corey’s facedown was a Recruiter and he got two searches out of the trade. He chose Descendant and Assailant and passed. Hai summoned Debris Dragon and attaccked for 1000.
Corey drew and thought about his options. He summoned Descendant and attacked over Debris, then set a spell/trap. Hai played Dark Hole and summoned Thunder King which was removed with a Bottomless Trap Hole. Corey played Stele to get back Commandant and Recruiter to his hand from the graveyard. He set a monster and passed. Hai summoned Consecrated Light and passed.
The pace was blistering as both players were ripping and burning. Corey summoned Commandant and attacked the Consecrated but it was thwarted with Book of Moon. Hai summoned Thunder King but he brick-walled into Commandant.
Corey flipped Recruiter and attacked Consecrated with Commandant and went to Main Phase 2. He summoned Descendant to tribute his Recruiter and destroy Thunder King and got another Recruiter from his deck. He passed to Hai who Special Summoned Cyber Dragon which attacked Descendant.
Corey was at 900 life points and summoned an Assailant to switch Cyber Dragon to defense and destroy it. Commandant attacked direct to put Hai at 2700. He ended his turn with a set spell/trap. Hai played Smashing Ground to destroy Commandant and end. “Do you have a monster?” Corey flashed him a Gravekeeper’s Descendant and Hai offered the handshake!
